Canada Unveils New Initiatives to Attract International Tech Experts, Minister of Immigration Announces

Canada's Minister of Immigration, Sean Fraser, has announced new initiatives and upgrades aimed at attracting international tech expertise to the country's digital system.

These measures, highlighted in a report published by ImmigrationNewsCanada, include six key strategies to draw in IT talent from around the world.

One of the initiatives introduced is the Work Permit Pathway for US H-1B visa holders. Starting from July 16, the Canadian government will launch a new open work permit stream, allowing 10,000 H-1B visa holders from the United States to come and work in Canada. These visa holders will have the freedom to work for any employer in Canada without specific restrictions, and their accompanying family members will also be eligible to apply for study or work permits. It's important to note that only primary candidates will be counted against the application limit, while their accompanying family members will not be included in the quota.

In addition to the H-1B visa pathway, Minister Fraser unveiled a dedicated pathway for permanent residency for employees in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) sector. This initiative builds upon the existing targeted Express Entry draws for the STEM sector.

Furthermore, the minister announced a return to a two-week processing time for the Global Talent Stream (GTS). The GTS serves as the fastest immigration path for eligible employers seeking to bring skilled workers to Canada. Fraser expressed enthusiasm for the ambitious goals set in immigration, emphasizing that they are not just about numbers but also strategic in nature. Canada's first-ever immigration Tech Talent Strategy aims to attract newcomers who can contribute to establishing Canada as a world leader in emerging technologies.

Fraser expressed gratitude for the collaboration of the tech, start-up, and business communities in developing this strategy, acknowledging their valuable insights. He emphasized that Canada's fast and flexible approach, which enjoys broad support from Canadians, serves as a true advantage in the country's immigration efforts.
