Canada Invites 500 Healthcare Workers from Around the World, Including Nigeria, to Immigrate

Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, announced on Wednesday via his Twitter handle that the country is inviting 500 healthcare workers from various countries, including Nigeria, to immigrate.

The invitation will be extended through the federal express entry program, which aims to attract highly skilled immigrants to Canada.

Fraser highlighted that the approach to immigration has changed, with a specific focus on sectors experiencing significant labor shortages. 

The healthcare sector is the first to benefit from this new process. "Today, 500 skilled healthcare workers will be invited to immigrate to Canada, and on July 5, we will invite 1500 more," Fraser tweeted.

The introduction of this new program is expected to double the number of healthcare workers entering Canada through the federal Express Entry system this year. 

Fraser emphasized that this announcement will strengthen the healthcare system and ensure that more Canadians receive the high-quality care they deserve.

Between 2017 and 2022, Canada welcomed approximately 21,000 healthcare workers, averaging over 4,000 workers per year. The goal now is to increase this number to around 8,000 new healthcare workers annually. Fraser emphasized that faster visa processing times will accompany the new system.

Furthermore, on Tuesday, Canada unveiled its first-ever immigration tech talent strategy, which aims to create job opportunities for individuals from various countries, including Nigeria. 

With an aging population and a declining birth rate, Canada is intensifying its efforts to attract young and vibrant immigrants by implementing immigration-friendly policies.

In 2022, Canada welcomed a total of 437,120 Permanent Residents (PRs), representing an almost eight percent increase compared to 2021. For Nigeria specifically, the number grew by 41.9 percent, with 22,130 individuals receiving PR status in 2022, up from 15,595 in the previous year.
